The Senate is expected to vote tomorrow on an amendment to the health care bill that would tighten restrictions on federal funds for abortion. California’s junior senator Barbara Boxer is strongly opposed. The amendment proposed for the Senate health care bill would do two things. It would forbid a public health insurance option from covering abortion. It would also forbid private insurance companies that receive federal subsidies from covering abortions. Senator Barbara Boxer calls it "the biggest rollback to a woman’s right to choose in decades." The Democrat from California says the measure is backed by a handful of male colleagues who, if they could, would overturn Roe v. Wade. Instead, she says, they attack a woman’s insurance coverage, saying “Oh, yes, this is a legal procedure. But you can’t use your own private funds.” The abortion language is similar to language included in the bill that the House already passed. Original Article |
