Sen. Charles Schumer’s standing among New York state voters continues to slide, falling below 50 percent for the first time in nine years.

According to the latest Marist poll in New York, 47 percent of registered voters statewide said New York’s senior senator is doing either an excellent or good job in office while 31 percent said his job performance was fair, and 17 percent view him as performing poorly.

Marist College Institute for Public Opinion, based in Poughkeepsie, said this is Schumer’s lowest job approval rating since April 2001 when 49 percent of voters approved of the job he was doing.

The survey of 838 New York state registered voters was conducted on Jan. 25 - 27.

Schumer’s favorability has declined over the past couple of months. In Marist’s last survey on Jan. 15, 51 percent said Schumer was doing an above average job. In November, he received a thumbs-up from 54 percent of registered voters statewide, and just last September, his approval rating was 58 percent.

His decline is most pronounced in New York City where 51 percent of the respondents currently give Schumer high marks while 57 percent did the same two weeks ago, 64 percent in November, and 66 percent in September.

“Senator Schumer is not immune from the anti-incumbent sentiment among voters, but it would take a major effort to unseat him,” says Dr. Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion.

Despite the downward trend, Schumer’s approval rating does not translate into a competitive re-election contest against potential Republican challenger, CNBC anchor Larry Kudlow. Currently, 67 percent of registered voters statewide would support Schumer while 25 percent would cast their ballot for Kudlow while 8 percent are unsure.

Schumer’s lowest rating among New Yorkers came in March 2000 when the Marist poll found just 39 percent of registered voters statewide gave Schumer good grades.

Marist surveyed 838 registered New York voters Jan. 25-27. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
